    This is a joke, right?

  2. MattSDec 1 2009 10:24 AM

First impression is that I preferred the fake one posted last week. The half successful attempt at rotational symmetry within the typography is nice enough, but take away the Olympic Rings and this could be anything. At least the Mexico 68 typographic treatment was based on indigenous art.

While some members of the design community continually pat each other on the back for producing work that is \"Out there\"(2012 included), they seem to have forgotten that it doesn\'t actually look any good. A basic fundamental of design it may be, but even if they aren\'t everything, surely aesthetics count for something

  3. David VosburgDec 1 2009 10:27 AM

    Um... Ok.

    It\'s a nice web-specific logo?

  4. Matt SteelDec 1 2009 10:35 AM

Meh. They could\'ve at least properly kerned the damn thing.

  5. LewisDec 1 2009 10:39 AM

sochi Zoih and sochi Zoiy greet everybody!

  6. michaelDec 1 2009 11:30 AM

Well, at least both sochi.ru and sochi2014.ru work. Because I always only read it as the first, not the second.

  7. RudkovskyDec 1 2009 1:15 PM

I can\'t belive. Its too sucks, to be true.

  8. samDec 1 2009 4:26 PM

    what is this?

  9. Andrey RussiaDec 1 2009 4:26 PM

    What!!!!!!???????????
    What`s that!!!!!!!????????
Full shit!!!!! Oh, my poor Sochi:((((((((

  10. StormchildDec 1 2009 4:44 PM

    Weak. Not a fan.

The font stinks, for starters. The year looks like 201Y. I imagine the designers thought they were pretty clever, reusing most of the letters from \"Sochi\" in \"2014\" by flipping them upside down and such. But really they\'re just beating a dead horse with a bad typeface, and besides that, I can\'t see any coherent concept here at all. The whole thing looks positively amateur.

    Swing and a miss, IMO.

  11. Mark StuckertDec 1 2009 7:46 PM

Matt, what (specifically) do you find fault with re: kerning?

  12. JarekDec 1 2009 8:35 PM

I really wish this had won:
    http://www.behance.net/Gallery/Sochi-2014-Winter-Olympics-Official-Logo-Bid/355269

  13. AndreyDec 2 2009 12:47 AM

I\'m from Russia. And Sochi 2014 will be the first Russian Winter Games & the first Games without logo.

  14. MickDec 2 2009 2:10 AM

Well I\'m going to break the cycle and say that I really like it!

The logo presented on here the other week was good, but I really like the concept this logo is pushing. Time to let go of your traditions people.

  15. CozDec 2 2009 3:00 AM

    Well, that\'s disappointing.

    They chose the \"safe\" route.

  16. MikaelDec 2 2009 4:38 AM

The one Transformer Studio did was a lot better... check out their behance profile if you havent seen it [here or elsewhere]

  17. IulianDec 2 2009 5:21 AM

They played the redundant card of \"domain name.ru\".
It\'s like this fine blog were named idsgn.org instead of simply idsgn.

The name of the brand is Yahoo, not Yahoo.com, Google, not Google.com. You attend Sochi 2014, not Sochi 2014.ru

    They overdid, overdigitised it.

  18. MickDec 2 2009 6:37 AM

Just looking at it again and I really love the way the \'hi\' and \'14\' play off each other. Rather clever _b

  19. Brent VermilyeaDec 2 2009 8:45 AM

    Awful.

  20. HughDec 2 2009 11:59 AM

Interesting is all I can say!!!!

  21. mariaDec 2 2009 12:31 PM

the brand should be about the event, not the URL. seems they\'ve gotten this a little backwards. let\'s try to get strategy right before moving to execution.

  22. AdamDec 2 2009 2:11 PM

Since when are there palm trees in Russia?

  23. PaulDec 2 2009 3:04 PM

    Adam,
Just find Sochi on the map ;)

  24. alexxxDec 2 2009 3:58 PM

Easy! A good logo. Pure and clear. RU is not only the site address, it also a designation of Russia

  25. JohnDec 2 2009 6:30 PM

I\'ll be with the minority and say that I like it, too -- and that\'s AFTER first seeing Transformer\'s laurel-wreath image. My first response was meh, but that lasted 10 seconds. It has some muscle, comrades! Plus a trick in the reflection and a Web address, too. Works in other colors and at every scale. And it looks stout like Russia -- with maybe even a hint of vodka!

  26. EvanDec 2 2009 11:27 PM

Sounds Good! I also like it, too. I really imaging; this:
\"sochi2014.ru\" is their new official & final web page of this Olympics. the letter arrangement of \"sochi2014\" like a winter land & the marine. Yes, Sochi lies near black sea shore. \".ru\" means the place of the host city of 2014 Olympics. The Olympic Rings... I think you have know what it\'s mean. An URL transform to the emblem means their motto & vision for 2014 Olympics. This emblem is cool, as what will the main stadium be, with the \"snowstorms\".

  27. OejDec 3 2009 10:48 AM

First look I didn\'t like it at all but I admit it really does look nice on that white car...

  28. Matt SteelDec 3 2009 10:59 AM

Mark Stuckert asked what letters I thought need kerning attention:

To my eye, s/o/c, r/u, and 2/0/1 are all a bit loose compared to all other characters. They aren\'t way off, but could be improved. Even if properly kerned though, I don\'t think this is a really great mark. It\'s OK I guess. I preferred the earlier version—not the one seen here, but the one with the wheel of leaf/flame shapes. I thought that was a stronger concept.

  29. scDec 4 2009 7:38 AM

well my initial knee jerk reaction was to not like this, but a second look and its grown on me, certainly more likable than the London 2012 one. Its simple and in the executions shown i think it works

  30. John Mindiola IIIDec 5 2009 7:24 AM

@Iulian: I hear what you\'re saying, but some brands DO have the .com in the name. For example, Graphics.com, not Graphics.

@Matt Steel: The kerning here is monospaced intentionally, so the elements line up more mechanically. That\'s the point.

It\'s brilliant. A logo with a grid. Love it.

  31. MickDec 5 2009 1:34 PM

    OH NO NOT MONOSPACED!!!

    *must... kern... now... *

  32. Matt SteelDec 5 2009 2:30 PM

Re: monospaced: I can see why they did that, but the problem with mechanical kerning is that it always appears optically incorrect. Some kerning refinements here would still maintain, even enhance, the mirror-image illusion. I\'ve seen many logos based on some sort of \"grid,\" but—in my opinion—this is not an example of the effect being well executed. I don\'t think there\'s ever a good reason for bad i.e. \"mechanical\" kerning in logos—not even if you\'re David Carson (or maybe *especially* if you\'re Mr. Carson, but I digress).

Anyway, spilt milk. To each his/her own.

  33. Brian KulpDec 7 2009 1:57 PM

I couldnt even read the year in the logo... until someone pointed it out for me. I do, however, like how the grid lines up with the top and bottom rows of text, but readability is going to be a little more important here.

Too bad they messed this up. I usually enjoy the Olympic games logos.

  34. RLDec 8 2009 12:35 AM

    like the triangles -ice breaking?

  35. eXweedDec 9 2009 12:14 AM

Omg. Mega designers are coming. This one is bad, that one is awful and so on. Every where, on every forum or blog same thing.

Sure, majority of negative opinions have no any basis. Written just to show that a person is MEGA DESIGNER and could done it better.

  36. Ashely AdamsDec 24 2009 3:32 AM

I was trying to find something in the negative space. Found nothing except a few intersecting lines. The logo is, at best, unimpressive. At worst, it\'s terrible. The fat and bloated typography goes against the toned and slim participants of the event. I\'m yet to figure out the logic behind the design. It can\'t all be just for the sake of some eye-candy.

  37. treksDec 28 2009 5:09 AM

check out the logo they built for the presentation. the second photo. particulary the \"u\" in .ru. it has a straight corner while the official version has rounded corners on both sides.

i\'m guessing there were so many iterations in last moments, they forgot which was the final one.

anyway this poor logo is a total product of russian\'s past. so sorry for Interbrand guys, i\'m sure they suffered and all their good work was shattered against poor judgement and conservatism of sochi organizers.

    that\'s what you call \"sovok\". (i\'m russian too :)

  38. rdes02Jan 7 2010 12:11 PM

In Russia, these logos are called- \"Hueta iz pod konya\"

  39. AbdelJan 8 2010 9:53 PM

    Well..not that bad!
But why the blueish logo on the right side doesn\'t look like the other one on the left side? Maybe they should\'ve try it with \"courier\" :)

  40. herdiyantoApr 9 2010 3:52 AM

agree....the visual isn\'t bad at all for me
branding phase is more than just a logo right ;)
