    What Verizon and seemingly ever other competitor to the iPhone doesn\'t realize is that people aren\'t just buying iPhones for what they do — they\'re buying iPhones b/c it is the trend.

    Hopefully the Droid is a nice phone b/c I really like Verizon\'s service. (I really can\'t stand their annoying commercials with the guy in the emo glasses though)

    I don\'t believe that this will negatively effect Verizon\'s ability to secure the iPhone next year. Just like Apple can get away with arrogant advertising because they have the best product line, Verizon can get away with being arrogant in their advertising because they have the best network.

    What Apple has noticed, is that there\'s also a trend of iPhone users getting rid of them because AT&T is a miserable service provider.

    Yawn.Followers always try to shoot the leader in the back to try to slow them down while paralyzing buying decisions.It\'s a sign of weakness to focus on features instead of benefits.Other than interchangeable batteries, those \'advantages\' are geek-speak.The iPhone is the best mobile phone I\'ve owned since 1993.It\'s that simple...really. iKnow.

    lol. well honestly from the first commercial i was confused and until this article had no idea what it was for. i\'ve never \"seen\" the theres an app for that parody commercial, every time i\'ve heard it, i immediately thought of apple. so naturally i assumed it was for at&t. so if verizon\'s goal was to confuse me and then make me think of apple, they succeeded. overall, i agree with hammer. focusing on the negatives of a competitor is old and weak sauce.

    @Mick - I might agree except our context was iPhone and how me-too ads fail to distinguish their phone / device / PDA / GPS products in consumer-meaningful ways.

    If you want to discuss the PC market, I agree Apple has long followed MS in OS market share since the IBM PC reached critical sales mass in the \'80s and MS-DOS (nee PC-DOS) pushed CP/M, AppleDOS, and others aside by riding IBM\'s brand coat-tails (a brilliant move by the way).

    Apple\'s form of back shooting (the Mac 1984 ad a memorable example and I\'m a Mac ads more recently) often focuses on end users as consumers instead of drones (which I\'ve been/am).This messaging works for home, school, and individual creatives, but less well for corporate needs.

    I must say, as an early Mac adopter who spent 25 years exclusively in DOS/Windows, my return to the Mac at home freed up many valuable hours of personal time from non-value-added maintenance.This started by dropping Verizon for the iPhone and once again recalling what it\'s like to own a truly great device instead of just a basically functional patchwork which becomes unstable, unreliable, and notoriously demanding of my valuable time.

    And thus, perhaps iGetIt?;)

    Well it\'s true, the iPhone doesn\'t do any of those things . . . yet. Of course it could do and it could do very soon and then what will be said?

    I think these ads end up being 50% promotions for the iPhone as leading device.

    I found the Droid commercial incredibly confusing because I don\'t have an iPhone (and don\'t know what it can/can\'t do), so I thought it was actually an iPhone ad mocking someone else\'s product until right at the end.
