Target had been (is?) selling cereal in boxes that also sported some really gorgeous, retro design:

I suspect this may be more of a Target-led program than something driven by the food companies themselves. It\'s unbelievably refreshing to see the build-up of packaging clichés washed away, but I doubt it would really take hold in the general marketplace.
A couple of years back I worked at an advertising agency, and they made my life miserable. As I worked on the design of a dish washing agent, All I would hear from my boss was - \"add more gradients\", \"I need more swooshes and waves!\" ... \"this is the trend right now\" ... \"minimalistic design makes the product look more expensive!\".
I really hope simple packaging design like this catches up, and becomes the new \"trend\". All those over designed products on the market shelves really are an eyesore!
Noticed other brands (for example, store brands not major brands) going retro and simple branding. Which quite frankly, I like.
Not meaning to be too cynical here, but I thought it was brought on by cheaper production runs ... simpler production, less cost ...
Or do I know not whereof I speak?
I\'d imagine it has to do more with the *perception* of inexpensiveness rather than actual decreases in production cost. blah blah economy and all that.
Grant. You are kidding yourself. Everything is about retro throwback, lately.
Well..the Ritz one looks well thought out at least. The Oreo pack is terrible! If that\'s the idea of simple packaging then I\'m sorry I don\'t want it..not much better than the previous one - both awfully ugly.
I think retro is nice esp. if it\'s done right. The new packaging design for cheerios, trix, etc were well thought out! I love them! However, the Ritz & Oreo (esp Ritz) new designs are awful! The Ritz box just looks sooo boring and cheezy and cheap. I would never want to pick that up! I feel like it\'s missing pieces to it. There\'s no \"UMPH\" to it!i know... i know... it\'s retro but I think they could have done a better job simplifying it :)
I love this! I\'m a huge fan of retro design. I think it\'s fun and well-executed. My only qualm about the Oreo package is that the swoosh of the lighter blue color doesn\'t strike me as authentic for a retro package.
The Oreo packaging makes special sense for Target.Look at the last letter and compare it to the Target logo.
In some ways I think the Ritz looks good and can be beneficial to them but for the oreos it doesn\'t make sense.
The Ritz packaging is beautiful. I don\'t like the look on the Oreo\'s package. If they would do away with the stupid blue swoop and gradient it would look much better, and ditch the singe Oreo and it would be a total winner. The White circles are so \"oreo\" in look anyway, you don\'t need an picture of the product.
Looking at the comments now, I see that this was last year, but I didn\'t think they\'d stick around very long.It would have been noticeable and gotten attention at first because of the dramatic change, but the attention would have been short-lived.Besides, I think the packaging on the Oreo especially is a look that people like.
